What is Zakat?

Zakat is compulsory almsgiving for the Muslim Ummah. It is a religious obligation, which by Quranic ranking, is next after prayer in importance. As one of the five pillars of Islam, Zakat is a religious duty for all Muslims who meet the necessary criteria of wealth to help the needy.

How do I calculate my Zakat?

Zakat is calculated at the rate of 2,5% of your unencumbered wealth.

Still not sure? Use our handy Zakat calculator here for your peace of mind.

What is Nisab?

To be eligible to pay Zakat, your wealth has to be at the threshold figure. This amount is based on the current value of 87,48 grams of gold or 612,36 grams of silver.

Who is liable to pay Zakat?

Zakat is payale by every adult Muslim, who has unemecumbered wealth (savings or money that is left after all expenses have been paid) to the value of Nisab.

Who can receive Zakat?

A poor person is someone whose property, over and above his essential requirements does not reach the Nisab threshold. The recipient cannot belong to your immediate family (spouse, children, parents and grandparents). Other relatives who are eligible can receive your Zakat.

There following people are eligible to receive Zakat:

  • The poor
  • The destitute/needy
  • Zakat Administrators
  • Those who have been enslaved
  • Those in debt
  • Travellers, including refugees

BUILD YOUR AKHIRAH – GIVE IFTAR & SUHOOR

Everyone looks forward to a nourishing meal after a long day of fasting. But many Muslims, in the world’s poorest countries, can’t afford to feed themselves and their families. At Ummah Hands, we provide Suhoor and Iftar Meal Packs to the needy so they can stay nourished during the month of fasting.

Invest in your hereafter this Ramadan. Make the most of the blessed month by providing food to Muslims facing hunger with your Zakat. Your Zakat donations allow them to fast comfortably and have enough energy to perform the extra worship we all want to do in Ramadan.

The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said ‘A person is not a believer who fills his stomach while his neighbour goes hungry.’

(Bukhari)

GAIN CLOSENESS TO THE PROPHET (PBUH) – SPONSOR AN ORPHAN

Can you donate just £25 a month or £300 per year to support an Orphan?

It’s shocking that one child is orphaned every 22 seconds in the world. Ummah Hands provides basic essentials including food, clothing, medical aid, shelter and education to orphan children in Bangladesh.

This Ramadan, can you help us support more orphaned children? Every penny of your Zakat donation reaches the children directly. Your Zakat will ensure one orphan child is cared for and educated, giving them a chance at a better future, while you earn the rewards promised.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, ‘Myself and the caretaker of an orphan will be in Paradise like this’, and he held his two fingers together. (Bukhari)

GIVE THE BEST CHARITY – BUILD A TUBE WELL

Can you help us give a community safe water for just £450, or £25 monthly?

Almost 5 million people in Bangladesh do not have access to safe water. At Ummah Hands, we build tube wells to give clean water to village communities in Bangladesh. Tube wells provide pure groundwater, which protects people from water-borne diseases. They also reduce the time people spend fetching water and improve overall hygiene.

Can you donate your Zakat charity to our Tube Well Project to give the gift of fresh, clean water to those in need? Your Zakat donation or Sadaqah Jariyah can uplift villages in Bangladesh, and help them to thrive for years to come.

The Prophet Muhammad said, ‘The best charity to give is water.’ (al-Jaami).
